Job Description – Licensed (New Jersey) Practitioner of Mortuary Science (Funeral Director/Embalmer)
A Valid Drivers License, good driving record and New Jersey State Board of Mortuary Science Practitioners License are required for this position.


Reports to - Owner, Manager and/or Worksite Supervisor


Objective or Overall Purpose Statement – The individual in this position will have met all licensing requirements for funeral director as established by the New Jersey State Board of Mortuary Science, and will strictly adhere to the limitations and liberties imposed on licensees by the board. The practitioner will ensure exemplary service to funeral home clients and families in a professional manner and will assist in operating the funeral home in a profitable and competitive manner.


List of Duties, Specifications, Standards, Requirements and Tasks – All the functions of a Practitioner of Mortuary Science in which you are expected to perform are listed below. The various functions will be learned over time under the supervision and direction of experienced and licensed funeral directors.
1. Perform all duties of practitioner of mortuary science.
2. Respond to the first call for the physical transfer of the deceased from the place of death. This involves working and coordinating with the medical examiner, hospice and various other medical personnel as necessary. This function is accomplished largely without assistance from other staff. It may involve weekend, evening and holiday calls.
3. Meet with families of the deceased to explain the funeral options relative to the planning of the funeral services and disposition in a sensitive and respectful manner (Funeral Arrangements).
4. Direct, coordinate, arrange and supervise all aspects of the funeral service which may include:
a. Coordinate with principals involved in the service, and obtain statistical data,
b. Organize pallbearers, reserve seating,
c. Prepare music,
d. Assist families with ordering and placement of flowers,
e. Direct services,
f. Drive the transfer vehicles, lead car, hearse, flower car and/or limousine,
g. Attend to special requests or instructions from the family,
h. Assist with the obituary and death notice.
5. Embalm the deceased. Handle all special conditions and ensure all bodies are properly embalmed, paying close attention to detail.
6. Dress, casket and cosmetize (including restorative art) the deceased. This includes attention to hair, makeup and nails following any special requests of the family.
7. Complete all required paperwork in an accurate and timely manner. Paperwork may include processing insurance policies, veteran’s documents and preneed contracts as well as typing and proofing death certificates.
8. Maintain the cleanliness of the preparation room including mopping, laundry, cleaning and disinfection of the instruments, restocking of chemicals, cleaning and maintenance of equipment.
9. Assist the other staff with the placement of casketed remains in various churches, chapels, and devices as well as performs duties associated with airport transfers, vehicle maintenance, loading and unloading caskets.
10. Answer incoming telephone calls when needed, give out service and price information (according to state and federal law.)
11. Assist in public relations by working with student groups, tours of the facilities and other community events.
12. Order supplies as requested.
13. The licensee shall be responsible for providing accurate and factual reports to the New Jersey State Board of Mortuary Science as required by law relating to his/her position indicating the extent and nature of such requests. This shall also include the carrying on ones person the pocket license at all times.
14. Provide guidance, assistance and training to the staff in performing all the functions of a funeral director and supporting functions.
15. Ensure that all calls to the funeral home receive a quick response.
16. Control costs, especially overtime and casual labor, to maintain maximum profitability with no detriment to service.
17. Provide input to ownership, management and other licensed staff on pricing of services and products as may be requested.
18. Introduce client families to the various services and products offered.
19. Maintain a clean an orderly appearance in the funeral home.
20. Assist in miscellaneous administrative duties as time allows.
21. Examine the building and grounds periodically to ensure proper appearance and maintenance.
22. Perform other duties as directed.


Relationships and Roles – As a staff member you will spend more than 50% of your time in direct dealings with our client families or providing products or services to our clientele.


Personal Demands – The nature of this position requires maximum scheduling flexibility and employee responsiveness. While this worksite will endeavor to regularize the work schedule, licensees must recognize that scheduling is subject to change and call back on demand.


Scope of Physical Activities –
Lifting –
The frequent lifting of objects may involve the frequent exertion of force at lesser weights. Your position involves all of the following; sedentary work (less than 10 lbs.,) light work (approx. 20 lbs.,) medium work (approx. 50 lbs.,) heavy work (approx. 100 lbs.,) and very heavy work (approx. 200 lbs.) as assisted by other staff and/or mechanical means.
Mobility –
The ability to move freely and perform the following functions is required as part of your job duties; standing (for sustained periods of time,) walking (on foot to accomplish tasks,) sitting (for activities requiring the same,) stooping (bending your body forward and downward by bending your spine at your waist,) reaching (extending hands and arms in any direction,) kneeling (bending the legs at the knee to come to rest on one or both knees,) crouching (bending your body forward and downward by bending your legs and spine,) climbing (ascending or descending ladders, stairs, ramps or the like using feet and legs and/or hands and arms,) pulling (using upper extremities to drag, haul or tug objects,) pushing (using upper extremities to thrust forward, downward or upward,) and grasping (the applying of pressure to an object using fingers and palms.)
Visual, Audio & Verbal –
Requires full field of vision, clarity and perception. Requires the ability to express or convey ideas to others through speaking.
Working Environment & Location –
This position requires the licensee to work both inside and outside our physical buildings. Weather conditions can range from extreme heat to extreme cold while outside under dry, humid and wet conditions.
While in the presence of dead human remains and the chemicals required to embalm and sanitize the same, fumes may result from combustion or chemical reactions and odors may emanate that contain noxious smells that are considered non-toxic.
Equipment to be Used in the Performance of the Job –
Will be provided under the guidelines promulgated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) as related to; Bloodborne Pathogens, Formaldehyde and General Workplace Safety.
