Job Description

A well-established marine services provider is seeking an experienced Shipyard Dry-Dock Foreman to lead and manage a team of welders, fitters, and support personnel responsible for vessel repairs and maintenance. This role oversees structural repairs, hull modifications, and steel fabrication, ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and in compliance with safety and quality standards.

Responsibilities

Crew Management & Leadership:

  • Direct, supervise, and coordinate daily activities of welders, fitters, and other skilled trades personnel.
  • Assign work tasks, set priorities, and ensure job execution aligns with project schedules.
  • Provide hands-on training and mentorship to enhance crew efficiency.
  • Ensure proper communication within the shipyard.

Welding & Fitting Operations Oversight:

  • Oversee structural steel repairs, hull plate replacements, piping modifications, and barge/towboat maintenance.
  • Review and interpret blueprints, welding procedures, and engineering drawings.
  • Work with marine engineers, quality control inspectors, and safety personnel to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Inspect weld quality, material fit-up, and structural alignment.

Safety & Compliance:

  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, USCG, ABS, and shipyard safety protocols.
  • Conduct safety meetings, hazard assessments, and toolbox talks.
  • Enforce proper PPE usage and adherence to safety procedures.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment.

Project Coordination & Quality Control:

  • Monitor work progress, troubleshoot challenges, and adjust as needed.
  • Coordinate with project managers, inspectors, and customers to meet expectations.
  • Ensure all repair and fabrication work meets shipyard specifications.
  • Maintain accurate job records, timekeeping, and material usage documentation.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in shipyard operations, welding, fitting, or marine construction.
  • Strong knowledge of ship repair methods, welding procedures (SMAW, FCAW, MIG, TIG), and steel fabrication.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, welding symbols, and structural layouts.
  • Experience working with marine vessels, barges, and towboats in a shipyard setting.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Working knowledge of rigging, crane operations, and heavy lifting (preferred).

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs and work in confined spaces and elevated areas.
  • Comfortable working in outdoor environments with varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to wear PPE, including welding hoods, respirators, harnesses, and protective gear.

Preferred Certifications:

  • OSHA 30-Hour Maritime Safety Certification (preferred).
  • AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or ABS Welding Certification (a plus).
  • Forklift and Aerial Lift Certification (preferred).
  • Rigging and Crane Operation Certification (preferred).
