Originally founded in 1997, the Baskin School of Engineering is the first professional school at UC Santa Cruz. Over the past 20 years, Baskin Engineering has become a unique 21st-century school of engineering and technology, characterized by evolutionary growth fueled by ongoing research opportunities that open new areas of intellectual inquiry. Baskin Engineering has grown to include six academic departments, a variety of research centers and institutes, and has ambitious plans for further programmatic growth. The focus of Baskin Engineering educational programming is to instill strong basic knowledge for sound practice in science and ethical engineering for the well-being of society, and its diverse curricula facilitate creative thinking and prepare students for productive and rewarding careers. Baskin Engineering is focused on building collaborative connections and expanding instruction and research activities for faculty and students at UC Santa Cruz, both at its Santa Cruz campus and at its campus in Silicon Valley, the international center of technological innovation.

JOB SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Executive Director of Development at Baskin Engineering, the Corporate Development Specialist learns donor engagement and fundraising concepts. The incumbent applies campus policies, procedures, professional practices, and principles in support of Baskin Engineering community engagement programs and activities; resolves routine issues independently; conducts research on potential supporters, including alumni and other individuals, corporate sponsors, and alumni working with potential corporate partners to identify prospects and promote programmatic activities to alumni. The Corporate Development Specialist develops and maintains activity reports and development tracking records; assists in creating, implementing, preparing materials for, and participating in specific fundraising events and activities with internal and external partners; and facilitates stewardship of all individual and corporate donors to Baskin Engineering by ensuring acknowledgement letters are sent and donor funds are appropriately spent, and by developing and producing reports on program activities, results, impacts, and trends.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $33.12 - $38.17/hour. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

50% - Conducting and Supporting Division Fundraising Activites

  • Arrange and attend meetings between the Baskin Engineering Development team, department, and other faculty leaders to identify and update divisions' fundraising priorities. Help develop the agenda and track outcomes. Organize and communicate priorities with the communications team and other teams, assisting in raising awareness of priority fundraising opportunities.
  • Schedule and participate in meetings to discuss corporate fundraising activities that could include multiple faculty members, the Executive Director of Development, the Senior Director of Corporate Development, and corporate executives at their offices and our multiple campuses. This includes independently following up to bring to successful closure when faculty and companies are slow to respond. Under the guidance and mentoring of the Senior Director of Corporate Development, learn to call and run such meetings independently.
  • Coordinate meetings with individual donors in collaboration with the Executive and Associate Directors of Development. Oversee logistics for meetings and guests as needed. Ensure appropriate follow-up is planned and enacted.
  • Schedule and participate in internal meetings between the Innovation & Business Engagement Hub, senior campus leadership, and the Senior Director of Corporate Development to help resolve contract issues with potential corporate sponsors and donors.
  • Develop, compile, and maintain reports on development-related activities and results, providing information on program impact and trends, and learning to conduct and provide basic analysis of data.
  • Coordinate and contribute to stewardship reports by working with faculty members and program managers to gather information about student beneficiaries of contributed funds to relay to donors.
  • Develop and track donor activity reports and other records of fundraising outreach activities through the campus database.
  • Assist with donor outreach by drafting and distributing email communications for the Executive Director and the Associate Director of Development. Collaborate with colleagues to develop systems for regular communication and help track outreach effectiveness.
  • Conduct research on alumni, friends, and corporations to identify prospects for fundraising cultivation. Collaborate with the Prospect Research Office to develop more detailed research reports and recommend strong prospects to the proper colleagues.
  • Help draft briefing notes for meetings between donors, the Dean of Baskin Engineering, and other faculty leaders.
  • Maintain and update the Corporate Sponsored Senior Projects Program (CSSPP) website and other corporate development websites as needed. Support Baskin Engineering Community Engagement functions, such as the annual Senior Design Showcase/Partners' Day event.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Undergraduate Success and faculty members to ensure that corporate sponsors are appropriately recognized for their contributions in printed, posted, or published materials. Assist in tracking student participation to relay impact to corporate sponsors.
  • Serve as key representative for Baskin Engineering during Giving Day, organizing and supporting student clubs and other programs to make sure they are informed about processes and able to successfully navigate the fundraising opportunity.

30% - Gift Administration and Reporting

  • Oversee the processing of all philanthropic gifts from individuals and corporations. Create and distribute acknowledgment letters; produce and distribute gift reports; and answer questions from faculty, donors, and corporate partners about gift processing.
  • Track management of gift funds and endowments with faculty members to ensure funds are spent in a timely and accurate way. Take appropriate action to mitigate any disbursement delays or inaccurate distributions.
  • Partner with the Executive Director of Development and the Associate Director to help create and produce letters of gift and gift notification Forms for gifts received from individuals.
  • Collaborate with representatives from IBE Hub, the Office of Sponsored Projects, and others to manage invoicing and collection for industrial research gifts. Complete the financial paperwork required by our corporate donors to set the UC Santa Cruz Foundation as a viable payee in their Accounts Payable systems.
  • Work closely with Extramural Funds, the Cashier's Office, and University Advancement's Gift Processing office to track corporate membership payments to ensure they have been properly received, processed, and completed.

20% - General Administration

  • Support the development team with expense reports and reimbursements.
  • Organize and support the annual holiday card project for the Dean of Baskin Engineering.
  • Provide administrative support for Dean's Council meetings.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Basic understanding of the principles of fundraising and institutional advancement.
  • Good interpersonal communication skills with the ability to work with a diverse population of differing temperaments, socioeconomic backgrounds, and political/ethical philosophies, and to be tactful, diplomatic, and attentive in personal contacts with donors, external constituencies, and university personnel.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills to effectively convey information to individuals at various organizational levels, both internally and externally.
  • Good organizational, time management, and decision-making skills to prioritize work, meet deadlines for simultaneous projects, make decisions using independent judgment, and adapt to evolving priorities and goals
  • Good analytical and critical thinking skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Research skills.
  • Significant experience in corporate development support in a university setting.
  • Understanding of the goals and practices of corporate development in an Engineering School.
  • Experience with corporate-sponsored undergraduate special events.
  • Experience with gift fund accounting and processing/coordination of corporate gifts.
